About Us

Aboriginal Youth & Family Well-Being & Education Society is a non-profit organization working with Aboriginal youth and their families. Our mission is to promote Aboriginal children's and youth success in completing their education by advancing the value of education through the provision of a positive learning experience. We believe that in order to help improve the conditions of Aboriginal children, youth and families, we must focus on prevention and intervention. We believe that family and community involvement is essential and critical to our success. The Society endeavors to nurture well-being and development of each individual in order for them to appreciate their own strengths and realize their capabilities.

Staff and Volunteers

Cindy Andrade (Ziorio)
Executive Director

Cindy is a proud Metis and has been working with Aboriginal youth and their families for 16 years. She began her career with Metis Child & Family Services as a youth co-ordinator for a federally funded initiative "W.O.W", followed by a federally funded three year Stay-In-School Initiative at which time she became very familiar with school protocol and developed a very close working relationship with the principals at McCauley, Westmount and Parkdale Schools and the families she worked with. In 1996, Cindy Andrade, Lucille McLeod and Jerry Letendre founded Aboriginal Youth & Family Well-Being & Education Society, funded by the Commission for Children Services. Cindy believes that a strong connection to your community, compassion and enthusiasum will ultimately enhance the program and benefit the families and our partners.  Cindy has also been a  recipient of an Alberta Centennial Medal, in recognition of outstanding service to the people and province of Alberta.

Educational Mentors

Educational Mentors provide in-school instructional support and one-on-one counselling for Aboriginal youth at risk of poor academic achievement because of attendance and other issues and work in cooperation with the school to ensure that the youth are participating and learning in school. Our Educational Mentors also provide on-site and off-site recreational activities to promote positive experiences for youth in school and provide/facilitate workshops and peer support groups aimed at developing a positive self-concept and life management skills for Aboriginal youth.

Family Support Worker

Family Support Workers maintain family contact and assists parents/extended family to access services and resources, such as government agencies, food bank, educational facilities, and other services. While encouraging parents/extended family to become involved in students education they also assist families to participate in sports and leisure activities.

Volunteers

Because we are a small organization with limited resources, the Aboriginal Youth & Family Well-Being & Education Society relies very heavily on the assistance and support of volunteers. We have regular volunteers from the community area who assist us in planning recreational and community events, or to help with administrative services such as answering telephones. If you would like to volunteer with us please call us to schedule a time to meet.
