The purpose of our programs is assist Aboriginal youth to remain in school and be successful in achieving their educational potential and to assist their families to support their children and youth in this goal. To accomplish this, the Aboriginal Youth & Family Well-Being and Education Society works with youth and their families to improve their educational, economic, social and personal prospects. We assist families of today, whose children are tomorrow's parents, to develop positive life skills, including parenting, decision making and responsibility. Through educational achievement, Aboriginal youth gain higher self-esteem, develop positive life and employment goals, and become connected to positive role models and support systems that will enable them to achieve these goals.
Why is the Program Needed?
As countless studies in the past have profoundly demonstrated, Aboriginal students throughout Edmonton, Alberta and Canada have yet to begin realizing their full academic potential. As a group, they are less likely than other students to do well in school, graduate from high school, or qualify for post-secondary training or education. As Aboriginal youth grow into adulthood, this lack of educational success or attainment often translates into an inability to obtain or hold meaningful employment - or to escape the personal and social aspects of life below the poverty line.
How Do Urban Aboriginal Youth Benefit?
The Opportunities Program provides Aboriginal youth with a well planned, culturally appropriate intervention - a lifeline that will prevent these youth from giving up on school, life and a possible future free from poverty and disadvantage. The majority of staff and volunteers are Aboriginal, providing youth with strong Aboriginal role models. The ongoing involvement of Elders, both in programs and activities and representation on the Board, provides urban Aboriginal youth with strong connections to Elders who can share their knowledge of culture, traditions and help to guide today's youth.
